THE SACRIFICE

'The people are sovereign. Over whom are the people sovereign? Over the people. So the people are subject ...'
Joseph de Maistre

We are subjects -
that is to say, not doers but
thrown down under, done to. We are
spaces in which things happen.
Someone is scribble-
scrabbling over us, but stop -
look - it's interesting, a sort of
audience participation spectacle.
We get to play a role, a bit
part, maybe, in the play.
So when we pray, or when we
write poetry, these are maybe
moments when we see,
through a glass darkly,
something pass by, something
mysterious, bearing many
artistically delivered
cuts and bruises.
Something
of the nature
of a King.
