ADDENDUM TO MY POEM ON JOHN ZIZIOULAS'S BEING AS COMMUNION
The tricks that the parents
put together must
surely seem to them a little
tired and tacky, but
when the child
lives them as something
magical and never before
experienced there must be
a moment when the adults
too share the sense
of novelty and delight and when
four, or six, or eight
eyes become, even for perhaps
just a second, two.
Something like that, surely,
is all that could possibly
be what we mean
when we pronounce the words
'Holy Communion', but then
who are the adults preparing
the tired and tacky treat,
and who is the child
with surprised and delighted eyes?
