IN PRAISE OF FRANCIS CRICK
A Christmas poem

So Francis Crick
says we are nothing
but neurons. I say
(putting it another way)
that we
are one
substance with the neuron
even as the Father is one
substance with the Son,
and equally (and
this is our glory) even
before we die we are
one with the rocks
and the stones and the trees
and stars and angels and animals. We
are matter,
gifted
with motion and force
that hears and sees
- for the brain
secretes thought
as the liver
bile.
We are, body
and soul, thought
and neuron, the created
substance - God
the Un-
created.
Today
is Christmas day
when the two
substances - the only
two there are -
united already in a womb
appeared
'to be gazed upon
as a small child,
God before the ages' -
thus confirming
the great truth taught
by Francis Crick - that we,
body and soul
and physical brain
and thought are one
thing - one
with all creation - flesh,
for why would God want
to unite with us if we
weren't everything - the
Universe entire - that He
isn't?
