ON CHRISTMAS DAY

I imagine Your head
appearing between
Your mother's legs - traditionally
without pain, but still,
all that fight
of flesh against flesh - and You,
alone of all the babies in the world, knew
exactly what was happening, alone
must have understood
must have seen clearly every
moment of that
terrifying journey
from the perfect
fulfillment of the womb
into a cold
infinite space -
You indeed,
Who invented it,
did You emerge, I wonder,
with Your eyes shut, and did You
scream?
